For the first time, Etruscan Translations recover the original language by borrowing from a sister script called Iberian. The resulting texts embrace a range of topics that evince linguistic mastery. Current scholarship assigns one sound to each Etruscan letter, then adds missing vowels or endings to sound plausible. The results predictably generate strange names connected with ‘son of’ or ‘dedicated to’. None of these strange names actually mean anything. But by using a consonant-vowel syllabary from Iberian, each inscription expands into a delightful composition. The language is Finnish, once spoken throughout Europe. Before migrating to Italy, Etruscans lived in central Turkey, where their script is called Phrygian. Translations are arranged by museum, so that visitors can match a museum piece with a translation. The most important is the Bronze Liver of Piacenza, an historical document from 5300 BC that maps people and places from Island Earth onto constellations in the sky.
