Thomas Malafarina's first novel is set in 1965 in his native Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. A young boy is savagely disemboweled in the presence of his friends at an abandoned coal mine by an unidentified creature. During the investigation, which follows, a Philadelphia television reporter learns from an eccentric old codger a terrible legend about the disastrous history of the mine - a tale about a mine disaster many years ago in which three coal miners were trapped a mile below the surface. Out of desparation, one of the miners sold his soul to Satan in order to get revenge for the disaster. In return, Satan transformed this man into an immortal soul-feeding demon that must remain trapped in the mine until he gathers ninety-nine souls. How do you kill what can't be killed? How do you stop the unstoppable? Welcome to a place where terror reigns, where unspeakable horror and demonic savagery is the norm; where lost souls writhe and struggle for a freedom that may never come. Welcome to Coogan's mine; the home of Devil Dan.

I got this book back in February, despite the reviews regarding poor editing, the numerous misspellings and improper punctuation. The most recent review was a good five months old, and the author had replied saying the problems would be fixed. They weren't. Or, if they were, a ton more were missed. It's really too bad, because the story is really very good. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the setting, despite the occasionally over-the-top purple prose. So much potential for a story, but then to be constantly yanked out of it by the glaring errors: too much focus on voice, not enough on technique. I made it all the way through, because I know a lot of readers don't like when a review is written otherwise. It is deserving of more stars, but I can't in god conscience give them.Product details

If you want a masterfully written horror tale loaded with twists, turns, and terror, this book is for you. There are many ghost stories from the anthricite coal region of Pennsylvania, but none so spine tingling as Malafarina's Ninety-Nine Souls. The same temptation of going in the coalmine after reading "UNSAFE MINE - KEEP OUT" kept me turning the pages throughout the entire book!
I just finished reading this book after reading the same author's Burn Phone. I really liked both books and think this author has a chance of becoming successful as a horror writer, but, and this is a big BUT for me, both books are full of typos, words spelled the wrong way but not caught by spell check because they are actual words used incorrectly (things like "pour' instead of "poor"), and bad punctuation (the guy's a comma freak.) It really pains me to only give this book a three star review because it's actually quite good, but there's no excuse for the lack of editing of this book. It would be more forgivable if it was more highly edited than his first book, but they are both equally poorly edited and it is too distracting to totally enjoy his books. Please, author, ask literate friends to review your books for errors before deeming them ready for the public. Without exageration mistakes are on almost every page and each one pulls the reader out of what could be a very enjoyable reading experience. And since your books are in available print on demand form and can easily be resubmitted to your publisher, go back and fix them! Just a little basic work would make your books worthy of five stars!
Can I use the term Kick Ass on an reveiw? Let's give it a shot. Ninety-Nine Souls by Thomas M. Malafarina Kicks Ass and he starts the kicking from page one where he takes a few moments to set things up then grabs you by the hair and drags you into one of the most gripping, horrifying, impossible-to-stop-reading books of 2010. To say Tom Malafarina knows what his readers wouldn't serve justice. Ninety-Nine Souls ignites that creeping essence we seek from horror and Malafarina shows us he has no boundraries. Buy the book, grab a beer and tell the significant other to keep the refills coming. Seldom do I read a novel twice, but this one deserves an extra star.

I ordered this with great hopes that it would be scary, and it was.
My problem is that the typos and grammar problems got in the way. When I read a story I don't want to have to read certain things out loud to figure out whats wrong with it and why it doesn't make sense.
It was only worth the .99 cents I paid for it.
I can't remember how I found this ebook on , but I liked the cover, so I read the blurb. I liked the idea, and since it was only .99 (99 souls, too. lol) I decided to read it. I felt the characters were pretty believable, though they could have used a tad more depth. I loved the story and plotline. Some of the descriptions were really well done, I thought, especially the way the author goes into detail with the thing in the cave/the death scenes. It was a really thought out novel, in my opinion. I enjoyed it. Maybe you will, too!
